The scaly hippo, known as the giant sunfish or cone-headed sunfish (Mola alexandrini), was discovered on December 9, 2021, while swimming lifelessly off the coast of Faial Island in the Azores, a Portuguese group of islands in the north Atlantic Ocean. .


According to a statement from the Atlantic Naturalist Association, a non-profit conservation and research organization based on Faial Island, local authorities picked up the hefty carcass and took it back to the port so it could be properly examined.


The fish was about 3.6 m high and about 3.5 m long, and its weight was 2744 kg.


Recall that in the summer of this year, fishermen from the Chilean city of Arica got a 5-meter oar king out of the water. This fish is called a harbinger of disasters - earthquakes and tsunamis.
